2024 U.S. Immigration Policy Updates: Border Security, Voting Laws, and Labor Market Dynamics
Biden Prepares to Implement Executive Order to Reduce Border Crossings
President Biden is poised to issue an executive order designed to significantly reduce the number of asylum-seekers crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The president plans to invoke Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which grants him broad authority to limit immigration when it is considered “detrimental” to the nation's interests.
The specifics of the executive order are still being finalized, but the initiative reflects Biden's commitment to addressing immigration challenges effectively. The administration is expected to publicly announce the new border policy changes by the end of April, outlining the strategic measures intended to manage and mitigate the flow of migrants at the border.
Trump and House Speaker Johnson Advocate for Bill Banning Non-Citizen Voting
House Speaker Mike Johnson, supported by former President Donald Trump, is actively campaigning for legislation that would reinforce the prohibition of non-citizen voting.
Former President Trump has repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims that voter fraud involving non-citizens led to his loss in the 2020 presidential election. However, non-citizens are already barred from participating in federal elections, and occurrences of such fraud are extremely uncommon. Furthermore, no U.S. state permits non-citizens to vote in state elections. This proposed bill seeks to strengthen existing regulations to prevent any ambiguity regarding non-citizen voting rights.
Foreign-Born Workers Key to U.S. Labor Market Expansion
Recent data indicate that the United States labor market and population growth would face considerable declines without the contributions of immigrants.
The number of births in the United States reached its highest in 2007 with 4,316,233, but has been on a downward trend since then. Last year marked the lowest birth rate since 1979. This drop in birth rates, combined with reduced labor force participation from aging demographics, has led to significant labor shortages. Immigration has played a crucial role in countering these trends, with the foreign-born working-age population seeing an estimated increase of two million in the last year alone, bolstering the labor force significantly.
Over 1 Million Indians in Queue for Employment-Based Green Cards
Recent figures from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reveal that more than 1.2 million Indians are caught in the backlog for employment-based green cards. This large number includes highly skilled professionals along with their families, who may now be facing a wait that could extend for decades to secure permanent residency in the U.S.
The extensive delays and significant backlog in processing employment green cards adversely affect not only the applicants but also their families. Many Indian workers find themselves in a state of prolonged immigration uncertainty, dependent on their temporary work visas to legally reside in the country.
