The Selective Service System is the US government agency that is responsible for the information on those men who can be potential subjects for a military subscription. According to the USA laws, all male citizens, even non-US ones, permanent residents, refugees, asylum seekers, and illegal aliens of 18-26 years must be registered a month after they turn 18 years old. Women do not need to undergo this procedure, while male citizens as old as 17 years and 3 months have the possibility to pre-register for the information to be added to the system automatically.

There is a list of federal programs that require Selective service registration so that you are going to certainly need one if you want to go through the naturalization process, receive a student loan, get a federal job etc. What is more, if you fail to do that you may get a rejection when you apply for American citizenship.

All men between 18 and 26, are bound to register for the service as well as provide a proof of it. Those who are older than 26 but younger than 31 must supply the proof that they did register when they were supposed to. In case you failed to succeed with the registration, you need to provide an explanation as for why you failed. What is more, you also need an indication letter sent by Selective Service stating your status.

It should be accented that the fact that you are registered in the service does not necessarily mean that you are bound to join the military forces. While the avoided registration due to whichever reason may affect your permanent resident application for the USA citizenship (Form N-400) not in the best way possible.

To register follow this link - www.sss.gov. In case you are not sure whether you are already registered or not – compose the Official Letter of Verification to receive the confirmation.
