What should you know about the Oath of Allegiance?
To begin with, the Oath of Allegiance is the last step a person is bound to take before that person becomes a lawful American citizen. Right after the N-400 form is approved by USCIS the applicant should be present at the ceremony where he or she takes the Oath.
To put it simply, until the Oath is taken – you are still not a citizen.
Your green card will be taken from you while the Certificate of Naturalization will be granted instead. This certificate is the most valuable proof of your citizenship.
Keep it in mind that right after you are granted the certificate you are bound to update your status in your Social Security record. After that, you can request an American passport.
