When do I need to renew my green card?
If you are a lawful permanent resident, you need to renew your green card every 10 years. In order to request a new green card, you should submit a completed Form I-90 to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services six months before expiration of your green card. Even if it is no longer valid, your status of a permanent resident will be retained, but you must apply for a new green card as soon as possible if the present green card has expired.
Conditional permanent residents should renew their green cards every 2 years. To remove the conditions to residence, you must submit either Form I-751 or Form I-829 when your current green card expired, instead of using Form I-90. If you are a conditional permanent resident, you cannot renew the green card if it has already expired.
